Hearst Steps up Global Expansion With Launch of CosmoGirl UK

Fashion Wire Daily

FWD - Hearst Magazines plans to launch between eight and ten new magazines internationally in the year 2001, beginning with the launch of CosmoGirl UK next spring.

CosmoGirl, the wildly successful teen spin-off of Cosmopolitan, will enter the increasingly competitive UK teen market via Hearst's UK subsidiary, National Magazine Company, the publisher of Harper's & Queen, British Esquire and Cosmopolitan. Aimed at girls between the ages of 12 and 17, the magazine will have a monthly frequency and debut simultaneously with a website. No exact date, nor an initial rate base, has been set for the launch.

British CosmoGirl will be launched under National Magazine Company's recently- created Cosmopolitan Group, under Publishing Director Jan Adcock. Competitors are likely to include Sugar, Mizz, and Project G, a new teen magazine to be launched next month by BBC Worldwide.

Though a Hearst spokesman declined to release further information on future CosmoGirl launches, he said: "CosmoGirl will definitely be among our future European launches."

Whether founding CosmoGirl editor Atoosa Rubenstein will play a role in the international editions still remains unclear.

British CosmoGirl is not the first international launch of the CosmoGirl brand. Earlier in the year, the title launched editions in the Czech Republic (April) and Turkey (May).

Is Posh Spice Becoming Fashionable?

Fashion Wire Daily

FWD - Last night's Elle Awards were a Posh event. Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham took home the award for the Most Stylish Look of the Year in her first public appearance since a battle with viral meningitis. "I've been really criticized for the way I look, so this means a lot to me," said the Spice upon receiving her award.

Other winners for the night included Joely Richardson, actress daughter of Vanessa Redgrave, for Most Stylish Actress, and Young Designer of the Year Luella Bartley. Bartley presented her third collection earlier in the day at London Fashion Week.

The boys were in tow, too. Jude Law was named the Most Stylish Actor, and BBC 2's "Naked Chef," Jamie Oliver, won the Most Stylish Male TV Star award.

But it wasn't a night for Brits alone. American beauties Jennifer Aniston and Jennifer Lopez represented the States, picking up awards in the Cover Girl and music categories, respectively. Both sent in their thanks via video.
