The Elderberries takes an honest and humorous look at a topic not often addressed in syndicated comic strips -- life in a retirement community. Writer Joe Troise and artist Phil Frank have created the world of five friends residing at the Elderpark retirement home. Through depictions of their familial relationships along with field trips, card games and the general tormenting of their caretaker, readers develop not only a fondness for these characters, but a better understanding and respect for their elders.

As Phil Frank puts it, "I have always gravitated towards the elders in our town. Their stories, their outlooks on life and their experiences, witnessing the changes in society and community, are fascinating to listen to."

The wisdom and wit of the Elderberries, acquired through various life experiences, teach lessons that many people never stop to take in.
