Stephen Bentley's "Herb and Jamaal" provides a humorous and thought-provoking look at three generations of African-American characters. The title characters own a restaurant and the strip examines romantic relationships, extended-family issues and race as it pertains to a non-stereotypical group of characters. Occasional insertions of poetry by such greats as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale-Hurston highlight the depth of this strip.
